Woman Stabbed in Birmingham City Bus Shelter Assault Succumbs to Injuries
The female victim stabbed repeatedly in the neck during a random assault near a bus shelter in Birmingham has passed away, authorities verified.
The deceased woman, aged 34 years, came under attack in Smallbrook Queensway, right beside Bullring shopping complex, shortly before 21:00 GMT on Friday, according to police statements.
The suspect, 21, appeared before Birmingham court on Monday, facing charges for the attack.
He was previously accused with attempted murder however after the woman's death the charge has been updated to murder.
Police Response
Authorities stated police personnel will remain around the city centre on Monday to offer reassurance, while detectives assisted the woman's family.
Detectives are appealing for witnesses who might have observed the accused, who is described as a Black British national, reportedly dressed in grey athletic wear, dark headwear, athletic shoes and rucksack.
Attack Site Details
The knife attack occurred near the Bullring shopping centre, across from primary access point of New Street railway station.
Law enforcement confirmed they classified it as "unprovoked attack" with investigators stating they were working to understand why it happened.
Witness Accounts
An area worker, employed in the vicinity, recounted paramedic and police activity after completing her work period at about 22:00 on Friday.
She described the scene as "quite chaotic", adding that some of her colleagues heard loud disturbances at about 21:00.
"Many my colleagues take public transport, ride the tramline... our security is compromised fundamentally, in the downtown area."
Ashley Birks, 25, resident of Stoke, said he came the city quite frequently to see his girlfriend resident there, expressing concern about what had happened.
"It makes me worried for my girlfriend," he stated.
"She doesn't drive and works at major concert locations... considering something completely unprovoked [happened], you know, it's horrible."
