Teenager Found Dead After Untrue Allegations of Stealing Ashes
One 14-year-old youth was found dead only a few days following being falsely accused of stealing the cremated remains of a deceased infant during a break-in, an inquest has heard.
Heartbreaking Finding
The young boy's mother and father discovered his remains in his room at his Connah's Quay home on 19 November 2021.
False Accusations Begin
The investigation heard how his parent got a communication on 8 November 2021 via social media, from a individual inquiring if Kai was her offspring. The message stated: "Tell him appreciation for burgling my flat."
In a statement presented to the court, the mother said the individual had been in the media, claiming her infant's ashes had been taken in a burglary - a claim which was false.
Law Enforcement Investigation
An investigation report from authorities later concluded the supposed burglary complainant had "lied to police" and "evidence shows that the property was never taken in the beginning".
Media reports about the supposed stolen remains generated social media comments, and although the teenager was not identified in the messages, his mother said people "knew it was him".
The "social media content were really distressing", she stated.
Mental Wellbeing Effect
She explained that her son had been diagnosed with moderate attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that disorder, other peoples' opinions genuinely mattered to him.
"This must have affected him severely," she commented, "especially when this was not true".
Kai was detained at home, but no evidence was found. He was transported to a police station and later freed under investigation.
Authorities said they would be in contact, the inquest heard, but had not contacted the family by the time of his death.
Isolation and Anxiety
His mother said Kai "withdrew into himself" after the detention and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had heard anything from the authorities", because his condition meant sometimes "certain periods could seem like much longer".
When she talked to him about the alleged incident, she said her son told her he had gone into the residence because the resident who lived there had said he could use the toilet whenever he wanted, but denied removing anything.
Digital Harassment
In a joint statement between her and her husband, the mother said her child was being harassed online after the allegations.
The proceedings heard that a 19-year-old encouraged Kai to end his life.
She had no worries on the evening before he passed away, describing how she had listened to him "laughing and teasing".
She portrayed him as a "caring, affectionate" young man, and said her "family is totally shattered".
He had been "obviously hiding his concerns", she stated, noting that he could not stand to have anybody "have negative thoughts of him".
School Reaction
The hearing received testimony from school staff at Connah's Quay High School.
On November 8th, she "overheard some boys discussing that Kai had been detained and that was the first I learned".
"He told me... he'd done nothing wrong," she added.
After the conversation, the staff member said she called Kai's family landline and left a message saying she had spoken to the student about the accusations.
The proceedings learned his family said they did not got that message.
Formal Finding
Senior coroner told the hearing he would await documents regarding what enhancements had been made to handling individuals with the condition, before determining whether he should make a prevention of future fatalities report.
Providing a descriptive finding, he stated: "Around 8 November 2021, unsubstantiated allegations were made against the teenager, a young individual.
"Probably falsehoods were afterwards exaggerated and exaggerated through the platform of online networks.
"On 11 November, he was interviewed by the police and after his interview he was released whilst investigations proceeded."
The coroner determined: "There is no proof that the acts or failures of any agency led to or contributed to his death and although it was the result of a personal action it is impossible to discern his purpose."
