The president-elect of the prestigious debating society has been ousted from office after failing a no-confidence vote that followed his disputed online comments about Charlie Kirk.

The motion against the student leader reached the required two-thirds threshold to remove him from office, according to an announcement from the society.

Contentious Posts

The dispute began after the student reportedly shared messages on online platforms that appeared to celebrate the killing of Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot while speaking at a university in the United States.

According to reports, one Instagram post reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the phrase 'lol'.

The president-elect is also said to have posted in a messaging group with other members appearing to express approval of the event.

Vote Outcome

The no-confidence motion was conducted over the weekend, with outcomes revealed on this week.

Official notices indicated that 1,228 ballots were cast supporting no confidence, while 501 were opposed the motion.

The announcement confirmed that the future president was deemed to have resigned in accordance with the Oxford Union's rules.

Election Controversies

Proceedings were temporarily halted early on Monday after the election official was reportedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from multiple individuals.

In a response, Mr Abaraonye claimed that the count had been stopped because electoral officials believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of process errors".

His statement categorically refuted that any representative acting for George had engaged in intimidating or disruptive behavior.

Continuing Controversy

The student stated that significant concerns had been submitted to the governing body and that he remained the elected leader.

His comment added that George was "proud and thankful to have the support of significantly more than half of university members" who supported a "safe election and resist attempts to subvert democracy".

Opponents have argued that any decision to keep him would "signal to the world that the society has chosen ideology over integrity".

External Responses

On Friday, Kirk's former chief of staff presented an open letter to the Oxford Union on a related program podcast.

The message accused the union of becoming a institution where "presidents of the union openly applaud the assassination of a ideological rival".

The communication warned that if Mr Abaraonye were to remain in post, Kirk's allies would "directly reach out to every American political speaker who has ever spoken at the society and urge them never again to lend their name".

The society had previously condemned the student's remarks after Kirk's death and confirmed that concerns submitted about him had been referred for official review.

The student leader had been one of multiple members to debate with the activist at the society in May.
